How do we begin to tell the Panacea de la Montaña story? Well, let’s just say it began with a dream. We had a great healing space in our home that many of our friends loved, which led them to suggest that we should start doing for others what we do for them. We became inspired to take our talents to the next level after we visited a spa in Mexico and enjoyed all the relaxing amenities there. We started to believe that we could create a bigger healing space than our home, and what we do there could create a ripple effect that would change the world. After all, even a tiny pebble dropped in the middle of the pond could create a wave that reaches its edges.
Armed with this idea, we set out to develop and refine our collective dream.
The first questions we had to answer was ‘where’ and ‘how’. Our visit to Mexico—coupled with the fact that we lived comfortably in Florida for many years—convinced us that our spa should be located somewhere warm, with mountains surrounding us and a clear sandy beach nearby. After doing some research, we followed some of our friends’ recommendation to try Costa Rica.
When we visited Costa Rica in 2000, we immediately fell in love with everything—the country, the locale, the people. We returned the following year to find the right place and settled on the first property we looked at. That property is where you’ll find Panacea de la Montaña today.
Do you believe in signs? We do. Part of the reason we chose to build Panacea at this location is because we asked for a sign to confirm our decision. On our second visit, we saw a family of monkeys in the trees. One of the young members captivated us. As he was quite young, he wasn’t yet adept as his kin in swinging. As the rest of his family moved on to the next trees, this little one kept on rocking forward and back on his spot.
Finally, he let go and jumped with his arms, legs, and tail flailing about. As he fell, he managed to catch a branch with one arm, then pull himself to safety with his tail. That’s all we needed to convince us: we needed to take a similar leap.
With a dream and a big leap—that’s how Panacea began. With the way things worked out for us, we wanted Panacea to be more than just a spa and wellness retreat—we wanted it to be a space for others to find their own dreams and take their own big leap.
